Eric Lombard named chairman and chief executive officer of BNP Paribas Assurance

The Board of Directors of BNP Paribas Assurance named Eric Lombard Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at its meeting on September 21, 2006. Paul Villemagne, who retires at the end of September, remains a member of the Board of Directors and has been named Honorary Chairman.
Eric Lombard has been Director and Chief Executive Officer of BNP Paribas Assurance and a member of the Executive Committee of BNP Paribas Asset Management and Services (AMS) business since 2004. He will continue to be assisted in managing the company by Chief Operating Officer Pierre de Villeneuve, whose appointment to the Board of Directors will be submitted for approval by the next Annual General Meeting of Shareholders in spring 2007.
Eric Lombard succeeds Paul Villemagne as a member of the executive office of the Fédération Française des Sociétés d’Assurance (FFSA, the French Federation of Insurance Companies).
Eric Lombard, 48, is a graduate of the HEC business school (class of 1981). He joined Paribas in 1981, working in international trade and financial management until 1989. From 1989 to 1991 he was technical advisor to the government spokesman and then advisor to the delegate justice minister from 1991 to 1992 and advisor to the finance minister from 1992 to 1993.
He returned to Paribas in April 1993 as head of mergers and acquisitions for the banking and insurance sector and subsequently head of the Financial Institutions Group and member of the Corporate Finance Executive Committee from 1997 to 1999.
He was appointed head of the BNP Paribas Financial Institutions Group in September 1999 and named a member of the Management Committee of the Corporate and Investment Banking business. He took charge of relations with corporates and institutionals in September 2002.
Eric Lombard has been Director and Chief Executive Officer of BNP Paribas Assurance and a member of the Executive Committee of the Asset Management and Services (AMS) business of BNP Paribas since February 2004.
Paul Villemagne, 64, joined Compagnie Bancaire in 1970 and subsequently Cardif in 1975. He became Chief Executive Officer of Cardif in 1982 and was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer from 1991 to 2004. He was head of the BNP Paribas insurance business from 1999 to 2004 and Chairman of BNP Paribas Assurance since 2004.
